Botched Execution, Planned Livestream Reignite US Death-Penalty Debate
President Donald Trump reversed the Pentagon’s plan to livestream former Army major Nidal Hasan’s scheduled Dec. 3 firing-squad execution, saying it will proceed as planned but will not be broadcast publicly. Hasan was convicted of killing 13 people and wounding 32 in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting; immediate family members of those killed may attend in person. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had supported streaming the execution as a deterrent, but the proposal drew criticism from lawmakers and others, including Vice President JD Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson. Trump said he considered arguments for and against a broadcast, and reports said he was initially unaware Hegseth intended to announce the plan.
