Milwaukee Woman Charged in Substitute Teacher Impersonation
Amy Jones, 23, is accused of entering Rufus King International High School in Milwaukee on Sept. 24 by posing as a substitute teacher and spending two class periods insulting and berating students. Prosecutors say she used racial slurs and sexually explicit language, made derogatory remarks about students’ appearance, and grouped students by race and gender; some students recorded the incident. Jones, a former student at the school, faces one felony count of impersonating a public employee and five counts of exposing a child to harmful descriptions. She was released on a $5,000 signature bond and ordered to stay away from the school and students named in the complaint. Her attorney said she has bipolar disorder and was experiencing a manic episode after a delay in receiving medication; school officials acknowledged staff failed to follow district procedures for verifying substitute teachers.
