Tropical Storms Odalys and Fay Form in Pacific and Atlantic

Tropical Storm Odalys formed southwest of Mexico's west coast. The National Hurricane Center's 2 p.m. advisory placed it 1,345 miles west-southwest of Baja California's southern tip, moving west-northwest at 10 mph, and forecast hurricane strength by Monday. Tropical Storm Fay formed about 405 miles southwest of the Azores late Sunday, moving north-northeast at 5 mph. An NHC Sunday update put Fay's winds at 65 mph after 45 mph at 5 a.m. EDT. KCCI and the Reflector said the center reported no coastal watches or warnings for either storm. Contested: The wire summary put Odalys winds near 45 mph; KCCI, Reflector and Kauai Now reported 50 mph. The wire put Fay near 45 mph; same-day NHC updates via KCCI, Reflector and WWSB showed 65 mph. WWSB said overnight conditions could let Fay reach hurricane strength and expected weakening by Monday and a depression by Wednesday morning. KCCI and Reflector said Fay will likely dissipate by week's end. Kauai Now cited a system southeast of Hawaii at 0% chance in 48 hours and about 60% over seven days. Both storms were over open water. Next is whether Odalys hits hurricane strength Monday and whether the Hawaii system develops later.
