Nonprofit opens rent-free village for New Haven early educators

Friends Center for Children has opened a rent-free housing village in New Haven for early-childhood educators, with eight homes designed and built through a partnership with Yale’s School of Architecture. The nonprofit says providing housing is a way to improve teachers’ compensation without raising tuition for families; free rent is valued at about $18,000 a year, against an average Connecticut early-childhood teacher salary of roughly $34,600. Teachers say the housing offers greater financial stability, while the organization reports low turnover in a field where many educators leave each year. Friends Center also convened national leaders and educators to discuss how rent-free housing programs could support the workforce and be adapted elsewhere.
