Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi won the 2025 medicine Nobel for discoveries on peripheral immune tolerance, showing how the immune system avoids attacking healthy tissue. The findings were described as relevant to autoimmune diseases including Type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. The 2026 Nobel Prize announcements begin Monday, October 5 with the medicine award at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. Physics follows on Tuesday, chemistry on Wednesday, literature on Thursday and peace on Friday. The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences is announced October 12. Each prize is worth 12 million Swedish kronor, about $1.2 million, for an individual, group or organization. Laureates receive their awards at ceremonies in December.
