Kansas publishes STAR bond boundaries for Chiefs stadium project
Kansas has published the boundaries of the STAR Bonds District that will capture new state sales-tax revenue to help finance the Chiefs’ planned domed stadium in Wyandotte County, team headquarters and training facility in Olathe, and related development. The district spans Kansas City, Bonner Springs, Edwardsville, Shawnee, Lenexa and Olathe; it excludes the University of Kansas Medical Center area, a largely vacant part of Shawnee and existing STAR Bonds districts. State officials say the boundaries are intended to maximize the project’s economic impact and repay the bonds quickly, with the public funding also supported by a state sports-facilities fund. The announcement follows a lawsuit by Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, raising concerns about the state sports authority’s powers and local control.
