Arizona suspends all 21 fraternities amid misconduct investigations
The University of Arizona on Oct. 5, 2026 placed all 21 Interfraternity Council chapters under interim activities suspension while investigating misconduct reports involving nearly half the fraternities, Dean of Students Chrissy Lieberman said in a memo. Allegations include physical assault, hazing, drug and alcohol use, and unsafe environments; some cases are under criminal investigation with university police assisting. Six chapters—Zeta Beta Tau, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Chi, Theta Xi and Phi Gamma Delta—were suspended immediately. Only business meetings are allowed. Chapters in good standing may resume after an advisor attends one of three mandatory meetings; quarterly advisor attendance is required thereafter. President Suresh Garimella met fraternity presidents Aug. 27, 2026. Lieberman's memo said he stated the university would not "tolerate further violations that put our students in harm's way" and that leadership told chapters to "step up and be accountable for the men in their chapters." Lieberman wrote the university would act if expectations were unmet and urged the Greek community to set an example amid nationwide scrutiny. Contested points: none identified in the record. Next steps center on the advisor meetings and continuing probes. Rated coverage also separately reported Indiana University cease-and-desist orders over alleged hazing.
