Rangers rookie Garand earns first NHL shutout days after clearing waivers
Dylan Garand stopped all 22 shots as the Rangers beat the Red Wings 2-0 at Little Caesars Arena, earning his first NHL shutout in his fourth career game. Waived Monday and unclaimed, he was assigned to Hartford, got an apartment, then was recalled after two practices when backup Joonas Korpisalo went on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. Sean Durzi opened the scoring 5:12 into the first on a power-play goal from Gabe Perreault's pass. An Oliver Bjorkstrand goal was wiped out for offside. Andrew Copp's tip of an Anton Johansson shot hit the post and dropped into Garand's crouch. Durzi fought Marco Kasper late in the second. Eeli Tolvanen sealed it with an empty-net goal with 1:16 left, his second in as many nights. Detroit played without Dylan Larkin (upper-body injury). Garand summed up the turnaround: "Cut on Sunday. Waivers Monday. No claim. Go down to Hartford, get an apartment. And then, you know, two practices and back up and playing on Friday. Crazy, crazy week." Coach Mike Sullivan said it "speaks volumes for his character," called him a fierce competitor with a great attitude who made some big saves, and added he is "just a good person, first and foremost" who loves hockey.
