Fulton Sheen Becomes First American-Born Bishop Beatified
Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, the influential Catholic priest and broadcaster whose radio and television programs brought religious teaching to millions, was beatified in St. Louis on September 24, 2026. At the Mass, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, representing Pope Leo XIV, emphasized that Sheen’s central legacy was not fame but his closeness to Christ, humility, and concern for people who were poor or vulnerable. Sheen’s supporters also point to his early embrace of broadcasting: his popular programs paired accessible presentation with serious ideas at a time when some church leaders viewed the new media with suspicion. The beatification was commemorated in Queens, where Sheen had led a well-attended Lenten retreat and preached at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs. Music at the St. Louis ceremony offered another tribute, including an organ stop named for Sheen and one honoring his devotion to Mary.
