24-Year-Old Pastor Dies During Portland Marathon

Treyton "Trey" Lara, a 24-year-old Foursquare Church youth pastor, collapsed at mile 20 of the Portland Marathon on Sunday, went into cardiac arrest, and was pronounced dead at the hospital days before his 25th birthday. His wife, Audrey Shin-Lara, said she saw him around mile 18 or 19: he ran over, smiled, gave her a kiss, looked good, and continued. She said he had trained for months, used running to relax, and had no known medical conditions; doctors could not save him. Lara had served as a youth pastor and in August took a national role focused on church planting and mentoring young leaders. He and Audrey, married about five years after meeting at summer camp when she was 12, helped launch Camp Genesis that summer at the same camp. He is survived by Audrey, sisters Jaylah and Sylvia, and parents Omar and Misty. A GoFundMe for the family had raised close to $60,000. Some center outlets described a heart attack; other accounts and doctors' reports cited in coverage referred to cardiac arrest. No further medical findings appear in the record.
