EU, Google Discuss Compliance After €890M DMA Fines
The European Commission is in talks with Google as it reviews whether the company’s changes to its search results and Google Play practices comply with the Digital Markets Act. The review follows July fines totaling €890 million: €460 million for favoring Google’s own services in search and €430 million for restricting app developers from directing users to cheaper offers outside Google Play. The Commission ordered Google to treat rivals fairly and allow developers to steer users to other purchasing channels, and says Google has begun making changes to search displays and app fees. Regulators will assess those measures and seek feedback from affected businesses and other third parties before deciding whether further enforcement is warranted. Google criticized the original ruling, arguing it could require the removal of real-time search features such as live hotel and flight prices.
