Memphis Jazz Festival Plans Three-Day Debut
Memphis’ first annual Jazz Festival is set for October, building on growing local interest and the city’s deep history of producing influential jazz musicians. A separate fundraiser and educational show is supporting efforts to restore Hollywood and Mount Carmel cemeteries, where notable Black Memphians, including blues musicians and civil rights figures, are buried. A Memphis Flyer columnist argues that Tennessee’s botched execution of Christa Pike has become a damaging national symbol of the state’s failures in carrying out the death penalty. Other local items include Germantown firefighters rescuing two dogs during a carbon monoxide emergency and an outdoor farm dinner near Byhalia celebrating local food and community.
