Anne Carson wins Nobel for blending classical scholarship with desire
Canadian poet, essayist, classical scholar and translator Anne Carson won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the first Canadian laureate since Alice Munro and the second Canadian woman to receive the award. The Swedish Academy praised her inventive work and playful dialogue with classical tradition across poetry, prose, drama, translation and collaborations with other art forms. Carson, who studied ancient Greek at the University of Toronto, brings ancient ideas into conversation with contemporary experiences of love, loss, desire and identity. Her best-known works include *Eros the Bittersweet*, *The Glass Essay* and *Autobiography of Red*, which reimagines a Greek myth as a modern coming-of-age story. Writers and readers celebrated the award as recognition of her originality and influence on poetry, translation and genre-defying literature.
