Global walks draw over 52,000 for disability inclusion efforts
Community walks in several U.S. cities brought families and supporters together to celebrate people with Down syndrome and other intellectual and developmental disabilities, while promoting inclusion and raising awareness. Events in Tennessee and Mississippi highlighted family connection and acceptance, with Gulf Coast organizers describing the Buddy Walk as a celebration of inclusion and community. In Savannah, organizers estimated 3,000 to 5,000 participants at the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society’s 21st annual walk, which raises funds for programs including a summer camp. A separate Gold Coast Down Syndrome Organization walk expects more than 1,500 participants and aims to raise $200,000 for advocacy, education and family support. The Best Buddies Friendship Walk in Charlestown was part of a global effort involving more than 52,000 participants across over 95 walks to expand opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
