Cornell Gang-Rape Probe Spurs Memory Debate
The renewed investigation into an alleged gang rape at Cornell has brought fresh attention to how sexual-assault cases are handled, with experts emphasizing that trauma can affect memory and that survivors may not immediately process or recall every detail. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has appointed Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor, while legal commentary on the Cornell case has highlighted institutional responsibility and the importance of preserving evidence and testimony. At Yale, President Maurie McInnis defended the university’s sexual-misconduct systems while saying she had requested a policy review, following a private discussion in which Dean Pericles Lewis described his response to parents’ concerns. Survivor and author Adrien Borne has also called for greater openness and collective action to protect children from sexual abuse.
