China Investigates Former Chongqing Mayor Huang Qifan
On October 13, 2026, China’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Commission of Supervision announced that Huang Qifan, the 74-year-old former mayor of Chongqing, is under disciplinary review and supervisory investigation for suspected serious violations of discipline and law. Huang led Chongqing from 2010 to 2016, then became deputy director of the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee of the 12th National People’s Congress and remained a public voice on finance and economic policy. The one-line CCDI website notice posted at 6 p.m. was carried word-for-word by Xinhua, led CCTV’s evening news, hit No. 2 on Baidu’s search board, and drew a Caixin brief and Taiwan Central News Agency report. Huang had served under Bo Xilai in Chongqing; after Bo’s 2012 purge, Huang publicly rejected Bo’s legacy in 2013 and kept his post until 2016. Right-leaning coverage, including Nikkei, stresses that Bo link and his image as a political survivor. CONTESTED: Authorities have given no specific allegations, and the investigation does not establish wrongdoing. Huang’s response, location, and any counsel are unreported; the factual basis of the probe remains unresolved.
