California Plans Wildfire-Safety Loans for Homeowners
New California health survey data show wildfire smoke harmed the mental health of an estimated 2.1 million adults in 2025, up from 1.6 million the year before, as extreme heat and fires continue to threaten residents’ well-being. Separately, a new state law will establish a low-interest loan program to help homeowners pay for wildfire-resilience upgrades such as fire-resistant roofs, windows and vents, with the fund set to begin Jan. 1, 2027. The program’s funding level and application process have not yet been determined, and state officials have raised concerns about reduced federal support for wildfire prevention under the current Trump administration.
