Korean Party Calls $54B Alaska LNG Plan Unfinalized
President Donald Trump announced a package he described as up to $200 billion in South Korean-backed U.S. energy investments, including an Alaska LNG pipeline estimated at about $54 billion, eight nuclear plants and a gas-fired power plant in Texas. The Alaska project would carry North Slope gas to a southern Alaska export terminal, but South Korean officials say participation remains under review and subject to domestic procedures and commercial viability. Trump rejected claims that he announced the deal prematurely and warned he could “double” tariffs if South Korea does not sign soon. The investment plans are tied to a trade agreement under which Washington lowered tariffs on South Korean goods in exchange for broader South Korean investment in the United States, though analysts have questioned whether Seoul can meet the full commitment. The projects’ costs, demand and environmental impacts remain contested.
