A cross-party group of Japanese lawmakers, including a member of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's party, traveled to Beijing to mend strained China relations after Takaichi's Taiwan remarks, with officials saying communications have been severed and a window for dialogue may be sought, while Takaichi warned that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could threaten Japan and justify the use of force. Separately, Taiwan's Deputy Legislative Speaker Johnny Chiang led a delegation to Tokyo to attend the Asian-Pacific Parliamentarians’ Union meetings to bolster parliamentary diplomacy with Japan, focusing on trade, culture, and regional supply-chain resilience.
The Second Taiwan Strait Crisis, also known as the 1958 Taiwan Strait Crisis, was a conflict between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (ROC). The PRC shelled the islands of Kinmen (Quemoy) and the Matsu Islands along the east coast of mainland China in an attempt to take them from the ROC, governed by the Kuomintang (KMT), and to probe the extent of American commitment to defend the Republic of China. The conflict also involved air, naval, and amphibious operations. Then U.S. secretary of state Christian Herter reportedly described it as the "first serious nuclear crisis".

The Second Taiwan Strait Crisis, also called the 1958 Taiwan Strait Crisis, was a conflict that took place between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (ROC). In this conflict, the PRC shelled the islands of Kinmen (Quemoy) and the Matsu Islands along the east coast of mainland China (in the Taiwan Strait) in an attempt to take control of Taiwan from the Chinese Nationalist Party, also known as the Kuomintang (KMT), and to probe the extent of the United States defense of Taiwan's territory. A naval battle also took place around Dongding Island when the ROC Navy repelled an attempted amphibious landing by the PRC Navy.
U.S. Secretary of State Christian Herter (1959–1961) is said to have later referred to the conflict as "the first serious nuclear crisis".
Overview
The conflict was a continuation of the Chinese Civil War and First Taiwan Strait Crisis. The Republic of China (ROC) had begun to build military installations on the island of Kinmen (Quemoy) and the Matsu archipelago. The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) began firing artillery at both Kinmen and some of the nearby Matsu islands.
