Two women reached the house on the 700 block of Perry Street in Erie just before 5 p.m. Friday visibly distressed, banging on the door and asking neighbors for help. A doorbell camera caught the audio. Inside, three or four muffled gunshots sounded. The gunman opened the door, called toward them, and shot both women dead as they ran forward.
Nine people died in that house and on the street outside. Two of them were children.
The 45-year-old male gunman was related to seven of the nine victims. The eighth was a family friend. All lived at the address. Officers later found a 5-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl dead on the first floor. Four more victims—women ages 24 and 44, men ages 19 and 21—lay in the second-floor stairwell. One of the women was eight months pregnant. The two women killed outside were 51 and 37. The gunman was found on the second floor with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and a .40-caliber handgun registered to him.
ShotSpotter registered two rounds and brought Erie officers within minutes of the 4:53 p.m. alert. By then every victim was already dead. Police and SWAT surrounded the home, used a loudspeaker to order surrender, and met silence. They deployed drones and a robot, obtained a warrant, breached doors, and entered. No officer fired a shot. Loud sounds during the response were flashbangs and chemical munitions. The city of Erie stated that the deaths did not result from any prolonged standoff or delay in police action.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah has spent more than 28 years on the job. “I have not seen anything like this in my 28-plus years,” he said. “I’m not sure that the city of Erie has ever seen the loss of life and the devastation that we just witnessed.” Later he added, “Some scenes stay with you long after you leave them. This is one of those tragic scenes. It was horrific. It was the worst scene I have ever experienced.”
Lorah said the two women outside knew something was wrong before they reached the door. “They knew something was going on at that house.” Investigators intend to examine their cellphones. “I think that as the investigation progresses and we’re able to look at what those two women knew when they arrived at the scene, we have to look at their cellphones,” he said. On the sequence at the threshold he was direct: “We believe that the shooter comes out and calls towards the two females, they run towards, and then he shoots them.”
Motive remains unreleased. Lorah has said he believes mental health issues played a role and that it is too soon for a firm conclusion. The last police contact at that Perry Street address, he noted, was in 2022. Officials have not released the victims’ names. An unverified GoFundMe circulating locally named the pregnant woman as Angelina, identified her father as the shooter, and listed Isiah and children Amari’anna and unborn Kyrie among the dead. Authorities have not confirmed those names.
Governor Josh Shapiro spoke with Mayor Daria Devlin and offered his administration’s full support, saying his heart broke for the family and that he and his wife were praying for the loved ones and the Erie community. Congressman Mike Kelly said he was deeply saddened and that his prayers were with the victims, their loved ones, and everyone in the community impacted. Devlin asked residents to rally around those carrying the grief and said officers faced unimaginable circumstances and carried out their duties with courage and professionalism.
The record available so far carries no developed gun-control argument from elected officials or committees tied to this case. What it does show is a legally owned handgun used inside a family residence against people who shared the address. The Constitution’s protection of lawful firearm possession does not, and cannot, reach into every living room to stop a relative who decides to kill. Limited government means police do not maintain permanent custody of private households. It also means that when violence erupts, the measure of the state is speed, lawful process, and clarity after the fact. Here the sequence is plain. Detection worked. Officers arrived in minutes. A warrant was secured. Tactical tools were used. The killing was finished.
