Minneapolis apartment shooting leaves multiple dead, officers wounded

Investigators said a shooting that began just before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Shoreline Plaza in downtown Minneapolis started when 35-year-old Carlton Neal Johnson II fired at a woman outside during what appeared to be a custody exchange. Johnson then moved into the building, killing two employees on the first floor before continuing to the ninth floor, where he died in an exchange with police after officers followed gunfire through an upper-floor hallway with limited visibility due to haze. Two Minneapolis police officers were wounded by gunfire—Joseph Michnowski (shot in the stomach) and Yahye Ahmed (shot in the leg)—and were expected to recover, while a third officer was injured in a separate incident after breaking a window of a locked squad car to access it. Authorities identified Officer Liban Mohamed Ibrahim as having fired his weapon during the encounter and said it remains unclear whether other officers also discharged firearms. Minnesota officials said Johnson had a valid handgun carry permit and that investigators are examining potential links to events such as eviction proceedings, while motive is still under review.
