Chicago, Rockford Break Daily Temperature Records

Chicago set a new daily high-temperature record Monday, with O’Hare reaching 88 degrees, surpassing the previous Oct. 12 record of 84 set in 2008. Rockford also broke its date record, reaching 88 degrees, as temperatures across the region ran far above the mid-60s seasonal norm. A strong ridge of high pressure brought the unusual warmth, which forecasters said would linger into Tuesday. Showers and possible thunderstorms are expected Tuesday night into Wednesday, followed by a sharp cooldown and additional rain Thursday; highs will mostly be in the 50s and 60s later in the week, with some outlying areas possibly approaching frost. Climate analysis finds Chicago has had more unusually warm fall days and that average autumn temperatures have risen 2.8 degrees since 1970.
