Yankees fan ejected and escorted from stadium during game
A fan reached over the wall in Game 3, overturning a potential tying home run as the Rays swept the Yankees from the playoffs.

Mike Daddino posted the YouTube video “Yankees fan ESCORTED out of STADIUM”. A fan in a navy blue Yankees bomber jacket reached over the left-field wall and the ball ricocheted off his hands.
ESPN reported that the moment came in the sixth inning of Game 3 of the American League Division Series on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Yankee Stadium, with the Yankees trailing and facing elimination. Anthony Volpe, facing Griffin Jax’s 96 mph sinker with two outs and George Lombard Jr. on first, hit a fly ball 357 feet to left. Rays left fielder Victor Mesa Jr. jumped near the fence. The ball disappeared into the stands and the crowd cheered what was first ruled a tying two-run homer.
Replay review overturned it. According to ESPN, the footage showed the spectator reaching beyond the fence into the field of play. Rays third baseman Junior Caminero waved his arms on the field as if signaling no home run while the replay ran. Crew chief Dan Bellino announced the interference call to boos. Major League Baseball issued a statement: “After viewing all relevant angles, the Replay Official definitively determined the spectator interfered with the ball over the field of play. The ball would not have left the playing field nor would it have been caught. The call was overturned, there was spectator interference and no home run. Additionally, the Replay Official scored one run and placed the batter-runner at 2B.” Lombard scored. Volpe was awarded a double. The score stood 4-3 Rays.
Security and NYPD escorted the fan from the stadium, outlets reported. He left alongside another spectator in a pinstriped Yankees jacket and cap. AOL noted staff wearing shirts that read “special operations.” ESPN and the Associated Press account carried by KSL both described a further delay after debris was thrown onto the field from the left-field stands. Spencer Jones then struck out to end the inning.
Volpe waited through the review. “Just hoping for the best,” he said afterward. “Crazy.” Later he added, “I mean, we lost. That’s what we’re dealing with now. That’s just what happened.” Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters he thought the umpires got it right. “When he hit it, to my eye looking out there, I was a little concerned right away because it felt like something -- I wasn’t sure. And then seeing the replay and seeing it unfold, I thought they did the right thing.”
