US Election Officials Warn of Voter Misinformation
Election officials in Nebraska, Florida and New Mexico are debunking social media claims that poll workers mark voters’ ballots and that such marks automatically invalidate them. Nebraska officials say poll workers are required by state law to initial ballot pages; Florida officials say voters mark their own ballots and a stray mark does not void a ballot, while New Mexico officials say workers do not write on ballots and ballots that cannot be read by a tabulator may still be counted through other procedures. Officials urged voters to rely on election offices and other verified sources rather than forwarding unverified posts. Separately, Northern Nevada officials warned that campaign mailers can resemble official election notices and falsely suggest recipients may not be registered; voters should verify their registration with election offices and be cautious about unfamiliar QR codes.
