UN Reports 5,700 Killed, Injured in Haiti
A U.N. update says at least 5,700 people were killed or injured in Haiti from January 1 to September 11, 2026, with more than 230 kidnappings and over 1,000 documented rapes of women and girls; officials warn the actual figures are likely higher. More than half of the casualties occurred during security operations, raising concerns about excessive force, stray bullets and explosive drones, while gangs continue to rearm and spread into new areas and along key transport routes. Child recruitment by gangs has nearly tripled, and the U.N. says minors make up an estimated 30% to 50% of gang members, amid inadequate protection and reintegration programs. Gang violence has also displaced about 1.5 million people and overwhelmed hospitals facing shortages of food, medicine and other essentials. The international Gang Suppression Force remains far below its planned strength, and the U.N. rights chief has questioned whether Haiti can hold credible elections this year.
