UN Appoints Trump Nominee to Lead World Food Programme

The United Nations appointed Luke Lindberg, a senior U.S. Department of Agriculture official and President Donald Trump’s nominee, as the next executive director of the World Food Programme. Lindberg will lead the Rome-based agency as it confronts severe funding constraints while conflict, extreme weather and economic hardship leave about 266 million people facing acute food insecurity. He succeeds Cindy McCain, who stepped down for health reasons after leading the WFP through one of its most challenging periods. The appointment was made by U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres and Food and Agriculture Organization Director-General Qu Dongyu with the WFP board’s approval. U.S. agricultural groups, including the National Sorghum Producers, praised Lindberg’s experience linking American farm exports to global food assistance and expressed support for his new role.
