Trump Threatens Korea Over Disputed Alaska LNG Funding
President Donald Trump warned that South Korea would face a doubled financial burden if it does not soon join the Alaska LNG project, although he did not specify what would double. Seoul says it has made no investment commitment and will consider funding only after assessing the project’s commercial viability, disputing Washington’s claim that it agreed to invest more than $50 billion. The proposed project is estimated to cost $44.5 billion to $54.5 billion—more than twice the per-capacity cost of many recently approved U.S. Gulf Coast LNG projects—prompting doubts about whether buyers would pay a premium for supply security. Developer Glenfarne argues that shorter shipping routes to Asia and access to stranded North Slope gas could make delivered LNG competitive, but it still needs additional customer commitments to support financing.
