Trump to Discuss AI Approach With Tech CEOs and Johnson

President Donald Trump is scheduled to hold a White House lunch Tuesday with House Speaker Mike Johnson and technology executives including Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, Anthropic's Dario Amodei, Alphabet's Sundar Pichai, Nvidia's Jensen Huang and OpenAI's Greg Brockman on how the United States should approach artificial intelligence. The lunch follows a private Sunday dinner between Trump and Amodei, their first one-on-one meeting. Trump told Fox News the U.S. is "about maybe a year and a half up on China," is "building tremendous, trillions of dollars' worth of places," and asked why the country should give that up. Johnson said participants should "go in a big room, close the door and sort this out," with timing "either end of this week or early next week." Sen. Josh Hawley said the government should inspect frontier AI systems so officials can understand what "tech titans plan to build and destroy." A former Anthropic researcher accused labs of "gambling with our lives," and Amodei has called for companies to "pace the frontier." Last week Tim Cook, Elon Musk, Jensen Huang, Sundar Pichai and others attended a state dinner for Xi Jinping. Meta shares fell more than 4% Monday, wiping $10.9 billion from Zuckerberg's estimated fortune, after reports of 2026 capital expenditures as high as $145 billion. A separate Tuesday event will launch America.gov, with Trump, JD Vance, Marco Rubio, Huang and Musk expected.
