Three Charlotte officers resign amid probe into allegedly racist texts
Three Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers have resigned amid an investigation into allegedly racist, sexist and religiously biased messages shared among six officers; Police Chief Estella Patterson has recommended that the other three be terminated. Charlotte’s Civil Service Board has final authority over firing sworn officers, while CMPD is pursuing the revocation of the officers’ state law-enforcement certifications. The department is auditing body-camera footage and records, reviewing its hiring practices, and working with federal partners to examine possible civil rights violations; the chief said investigators have not found evidence of such violations so far.
