Cyberattack Disrupts Refrigeration at French Supermarkets
French authorities are investigating a cyberattack that remotely manipulated internet-connected refrigeration systems at several hundred supermarkets overnight Oct. 11–12; estimates put the number of affected locations as high as about 700. Temperatures reportedly reached 50°C, forcing retailers including Carrefour, Intermarché and Coopérative U to discard fresh and frozen food, and fires were reported at some locations. Losses are now estimated at tens of millions of euros, and incidents were also reported in other European countries. Investigators have not identified those responsible, a motive or the precise attack method; companies and researchers have pointed to outdated or vulnerable refrigeration controllers accessible online. France’s cybersecurity agency warned the attacks may still be underway and urged retailers to secure network access, update firmware and change passwords.
