Suspected vehicle breach at Leipzig airport near grounded Russian planes
Shortly before 11 p.m. on October 17, damage was found to a perimeter fence at Leipzig/Halle Airport, triggering a police operation that closed the north runway and suspended north-side flight operations while the south runway remained open. Leipzig police said investigations so far have shown it is highly likely a vehicle crashed through the fence; the vehicle has not been located. Federal police and Saxony state police searched the grounds. A Leipzig Police Department statement said neither unauthorized persons nor suspicious objects were found, with further searches using additional personnel planned. Airport spokesperson Uwe Schuhart said there were no restrictions on passenger or cargo traffic because a second runway was available. The damaged section is near three Russian Antonov cargo planes parked at the airport and grounded under EU sanctions imposed in 2022. In August a drone carrying explosives was found near Ukrainian cargo planes at the same airport; the German government blamed Russia and Moscow denied it. Authorities have not confirmed any link between the fence breach and that incident or the Russian planes. Motive and full circumstances remain unclear.
