Sudan famine risk rises in Darfur, Kordofan
Sudan faces a rising risk of famine in parts of Greater Darfur and Greater Kordofan, where conflict and mass displacement are compounded by an El Niño-related drought affecting more than half the country and severe shortages of humanitarian aid. The IPC reports worsening acute malnutrition, including critically high rates among children in displacement camps, while drought has damaged crops, reduced household incomes and contributed to rising food prices. Healthcare and clean water are scarce, and insecurity and funding shortfalls are preventing many people—especially children with severe malnutrition—from receiving lifesaving treatment; aid workers and supplies have also come under attack. The alert warns that hunger, malnutrition and deaths could worsen without a substantial increase in assistance and safe humanitarian access; an earlier IPC assessment found nearly 19.5 million people facing acute food insecurity in May.
