Student sues UW over alleged failure to protect
A University of Washington student identified as A.P. is suing the university and Wyatt Ohara, who pleaded guilty to third-degree rape in 2024, alleging UW failed to protect her from a foreseeable assault at a Pi Kappa Phi fraternity event in November 2022. The lawsuit says Ohara had previously been subject to a restraining order involving alleged sexual misconduct and that the fraternity knew of his behavior; it alleges he gave A.P. excessive alcohol before raping her while she was incapacitated. UW says the earlier temporary order had expired before the students enrolled and that the university was unaware of any active court-approved protective order. The university says it investigated the assault, permanently withdrew Ohara, and will not allow him to re-enroll. The case has drawn comparisons to a separate, high-profile Cornell University fraternity assault lawsuit and renewed attention to campus sexual assault and Greek life.
