Street Redesigns Alter Traffic Lanes Across Cities

North Carolina transportation officials are still proposing to reduce South Church Street in Burlington from four travel lanes to two to address frequent crashes, but have dropped an earlier plan for a continuous median after concerns from emergency services. In Manhattan, New York City completed Avenue B changes that make three blocks northbound-only for vehicles while allowing two-way bicycle travel and adding pedestrian safety features, loading zones and barriers; the redesign aims to discourage through traffic while preserving local and emergency access. In Tulsa, Lynn Lane is being narrowed in stages for resurfacing, with northbound and then southbound traffic detoured through mid-November. Davenport has begun converting a section of 4th Street to two-way traffic, with business access remaining open during the work.
