Stopping GLP-1 Drugs Linked to Higher Heart Risk
GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic can produce very different weight-loss results, with eating patterns potentially playing a role: research cited in one report found stronger results among people who overeat in response to food cues than among emotional eaters, who may benefit from added behavioral or other support. Separate real-world data reported by Novo found that adults with type 2 diabetes who increased Ozempic from 1 mg to 2 mg had a 6% lower observed risk of major cardiovascular events than those who switched to Mounjaro, though the comparison reflects observational data. A study of more than 333,000 U.S. veterans found that interrupting GLP-1 treatment was associated with rising cardiovascular risk; after two years off treatment, risk was up to 22% higher than among those who continued. Together, the reports highlight that individual response varies and that maintaining treatment may matter for cardiovascular protection, while the findings do not establish that the same outcomes will apply to every patient.
