Arizona State Names Hakstol Amid Hockey Probe
Arizona State named Dave Hakstol its men’s hockey head coach, replacing Greg Powers, who mutually agreed to leave after being placed on administrative leave. The change comes amid an ongoing university investigation into an Aug. 20 workout during which sophomore defenseman Matthew Mayich suffered a heatstroke-related brain injury; his prognosis remains dire. Seven players reportedly called for the coaching staff’s removal and raised concerns about Powers’ response, and reports said the workout was led by a non-staff instructor who had not been properly vetted. The university has not publicly attributed responsibility for the incident and appointed former Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Scott Bales to lead the investigation. Hakstol, a former North Dakota, NHL and Colorado Avalanche coach, returns to college hockey, and two-time Stanley Cup winner Matt Greene is joining the staff as an assistant.
