Sleep program boosts college grades, meets seven-hour target

A series of studies led by health economist Osea Giuntella found that a simple, low-cost intervention can meaningfully improve college students’ sleep and, in turn, their academic performance, establishing what researchers call the first field experiment to demonstrate a causal link. The experiments tracked 1,149 students who, on average, slept 6.6 hours per night with nearly 29% of weeknights under six hours; the treatment group received reminders to achieve seven hours of sleep, plus a small nightly incentive of about $4.75 for four weeks, while a control group wore Fitbits without incentives. The intervention increased weeknight sleep and was associated with higher course grades that persisted into the following semester, underscoring that longer sleep can causally boost academic outcomes. Researchers emphasize the pervasiveness of sleep deprivation among young adults and the potential for scalable, affordable campus programs to improve performance without heavy costs. Related findings also highlight that sleep quality has strong ties to school performance and social well-being, sometimes outweighing screen time or diet in teens, and interventions targeting sleep may be particularly beneficial for students facing anxiety or depression. These studies collectively suggest that improving sleep is not only good for health but can meaningfully enhance learning and social outcomes on campus and beyond.
