Schools Mark Centuries of Community History
Schools and communities are marking major anniversaries by honoring their histories and the people who sustained them. In Memphis, Booker T. Washington High School celebrated its centennial with a parade, while alumni reflected on its legacy as the city’s first public high school for Black students. In Los Angeles, Tom Bradley Global Awareness Magnet Elementary School’s centennial jubilee recognized generations of students, staff and community partners. The Hope Rosenwald School near Pomaria also marked 100 years, celebrating its role in Black education and the community’s efforts to preserve the historic school after it closed. Dehesa School District is planning a community event for its 125th anniversary, with student presentations and Kumeyaay bird dancing.
