Santa Maria Leaders Outline Growth, Budget Strains

Santa Maria leaders used the city’s 2026 State of the City address, themed “From Vision to Action,” to discuss growth, economic development, housing, public safety and infrastructure. City Manager David Rowlands highlighted financial pressures that have led to reduced library hours and eliminated positions as the city works to close a former $25 million budget gap. He urged voters to consider Measure C, a November ballot proposal to raise the local sales tax from 8.75% to 9.25%, which city officials say could generate $13 million annually for locally controlled spending with transparency and oversight. Officials also cited lower crime, planned Highway 101 interchange projects and opportunities to guide the city’s future growth.
