Report: American Dream Costs $5.3 Million, Wages Lag
Investopedia estimates that achieving eight traditional American Dream milestones costs about $5.3 million over a lifetime, up 4.1% from the previous year and rising faster than wages. Homeownership is the largest expense, followed by transportation and retirement; raising and educating two children is another major cost. A full-time worker with a bachelor’s degree is estimated to earn about $3.6 million over a career, or roughly $4.1 million including 20 years of Social Security benefits—still about $1.2 million below the estimated total. The figures highlight a widening gap between the cost of these milestones and many Americans’ expected lifetime resources, though the analysis is intended as a cost framework rather than a prediction for every household.
