Federal Judge Allows State Takeover of Memphis Schools
A federal judge lifted the order blocking Tennessee’s nine-member Educational Oversight Board from exercising authority over Memphis-Shelby County Schools. The board can make major operational decisions, including hiring and firing district leaders, rejecting budgets and issuing vetoes. The ruling followed the board chairman’s statement that it was ready to serve. It does not resolve a separate Chancery Court lawsuit brought by the district and Shelby County, whose assigned judge has recused herself. The plaintiffs argue the state-appointed board strips power from elected local officials and disenfranchises county voters.
