Trump Forms Committee to Probe Fed’s Cook
President Donald Trump on Friday ordered a three-member committee to investigate Fed Governor Lisa Cook over alleged false mortgage statements. The committee's mandate states the Committee shall, on November 5, 2026, conduct an in-person hearing to consider the evidence and allegations against Governor Cook. Members are a White House economic policy official, the head of the Office of Government Ethics, and the head of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Cook must appear, present evidence, respond to questions, and may submit a final written response by November 10 before a recommendation on removal. Trump first sought to fire Cook last summer over alleged mortgage application misrepresentations. Cook denied the allegations in writing, argued there was no legal basis to fire her, and challenged her dismissal in court. The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in June she could remain, citing inadequate notice and opportunity to respond. The White House then gave her 21 days to respond to allegations before reviving the effort. CNBC first reported the memo; the White House statement ran Friday but was dated two days earlier. Sources do not dispute the core facts or dates. Next are the November 5 hearing and the committee's advice to Trump.
