Man Arrested Over Alleged Texas Capitol Attack Threat
Texas authorities arrested 40-year-old Benny Caldera Jr. around 3 a.m. Wednesday at his Converse home after DPS received what it called credible information Tuesday evening about a violent attack planned on the State Capitol for Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026. DPS worked with the FBI and local law enforcement before SWAT made the arrest. Caldera was charged with felony terroristic threat against a public servant, a third-degree felony, and held on $75,000 bond at Bexar County Jail. Caldera posted bond and was released with a GPS tracker, per jail records. NBC News reported the release and a prior November 2023 charge of unlicensed carrying of a weapon. Gov. Greg Abbott said on social media DPS was assisted by the FBI and that "Texas will NOT tolerate threats of violence against our Capitol." DPS notified state legislators. Senate Secretary Patsy Spaw said security would increase. The Capitol stayed open with an increased presence. Authorities have not disclosed details of the alleged plan, a motive, any intended target, or whether others were involved. The investigation remains active. No injuries were reported.
