Man wounded at Trump Butler rally dies at 76

James Copenhaver, 76, who was shot twice at Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024, has died. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office said he died Wednesday at West Penn Hospital; his cause of death has not been released, and it is unclear whether his shooting injuries contributed. He suffered severe injuries, including damage to his colon and arm and lasting nerve damage, underwent multiple surgeries, and reportedly still had bullet fragments in his body. Copenhaver and fellow victim David Dutch sued the federal government, alleging security failures led to their injuries. The attack killed rallygoer Corey Comperatore, wounded Dutch and injured Trump; gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks was killed by a Secret Service counter-sniper.
