Patriots’ Christian Gonzalez Earns Week 1 Team Honors

Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez is preparing for a major Week 2 test against Steelers receiver DK Metcalf after signing a reported four-year, $135 million extension that set records for a cornerback. Gonzalez impressed in New England’s season-opening loss to Seattle, allowing one catch for 4 yards on five targets, breaking up two passes and giving up a 39.6 passer rating when targeted, according to Pro Football Focus. His performance earned him a spot on PFF’s Week 1 Team of the Week and reinforced expectations that he could become the latest elite cornerback in a Patriots tradition that includes Mike Haynes, Ty Law and Stephon Gilmore.
