New Haven Alders Demand 16 School Safety Actions
New Haven’s Board of Alders Education Committee is urging school officials to act within 30 to 60 days on 16 high-priority steps to address hazardous school conditions, including leaks, mold, pests, poor ventilation, and broken doors and windows. The proposals call for indoor air-quality monitoring and clearer standards for temperature and humidity, along with air purifiers where needed. To improve accountability, the committee wants a public, building-by-building maintenance dashboard, defined repair timelines and responsibility, and a plan to raise funds for major upgrades. The demands follow testimony from students, families, and school staff, as well as safety concerns raised by city officials; the committee requested a progress update at the school board’s Oct. 28 meeting.
