Johnson Says He Might Start Lawn Business If GOP Loses House
House Speaker Mike Johnson told Fox News reporter Aishah Hasnie he does not know his next chapter of life if Republicans lose the House majority. He said that if God moves on their hearts to return to Shreveport and start a lawn business, he will do so with equal fervor, wanting to be of highest and best use to God and country. The remarks were reported October 8, 2026, ahead of the November 3 election. Johnson said a House loss would mean the people were misled and that he could not see how he would be blamed because he is traveling nonstop on a six-week swing across more than 40 districts in 22 states. Reuters/Ipsos found 44% of registered voters would vote Democrat, 37% Republican, and 13% undecided; 65% of U.S. adults disapproved of Trump's second term. In September he told the Washington Examiner that Hakeem Jeffries would remain minority leader. Three GOP lawmakers told Fox they expect Democrats to pick up 20 to 25 seats, and Republicans have privately discussed a potential leadership shake-up if Democrats win. Johnson said he has not given a minority-leader role a moment's thought.
