Jewish Communities Mark, Plan October 7 Commemorations
As the third anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack approaches, schools and Jewish communities are marking the date through memorial events and discussions about Jewish identity, safety and resilience. At the University of Michigan, about 200 people joined a student-organized march and memorial service, while Israel’s Education Ministry plans school ceremonies featuring victims’ stories, discussions, psychological support and volunteer activities. Jewish educators say the post-Oct. 7 challenge is not only what students learn, but how they understand and live their Jewish identity, particularly as they encounter the wider world. In U.S. public schools, some Jewish students are building broader alliances and welcoming non-Jewish peers into clubs and educational events, even as organizers warn of anti-Israel walkouts and antisemitism. Separately, protesters in New York City demanded accountability after an antisemitic comment was attributed to a Bronx public school teacher, arguing that Jewish students must be protected and educators held to account.
