Italy's Foreign Ministry Says Cyberattack on Website Mitigated by Security
On October 8, 2026, Italy's Foreign Ministry (the Farnesina) said its website faced a cyberattack that security systems mitigated with no service disruptions. It stated: "Since this morning, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website has been the target of a cyberattack; so far, this has been effectively mitigated by security systems, causing no service disruptions." The attack was described as a DDoS flood of fake access requests. The ministry is monitoring with Polo Strategico Nazionale and the National Cybersecurity Agency and checking diplomatic and consular sites abroad. Postal Police, CNAIPIC and ACN mobilized. Antonio Tajani said cybersecurity is a key element of last year's ministry reform and that prevention, monitoring and response capabilities, including technological ones, had been strengthened. Contested: NoName057(16) claimed responsibility; the ministry has not publicly confirmed attribution. Hours earlier Maria Zakharova called Tajani's September 2 Wicklow remarks on possible Russian election interference. She rejected any Russian interference abroad, saying Western elites "go so far as to kidnap the presidents of countries," and added: "Nothing stops them from shaping political processes in sovereign countries." Rome prosecutors opened an investigation for unauthorised access to a computer system and await a formal report. Italy plans work with Romania and other EU states on proposals to identify cyberattack actors.
