Hundreds Protest Turkish Embassy, Seek Lumbuye Extradition

Hundreds of Patriotic League of Uganda supporters protested outside Turkey’s embassy in Kampala, demanding that Ankara extradite Ugandan dissident Fred Lumbuye. Lumbuye, who has lived in Turkey for years, continues to post criticism of Uganda’s government, which accuses him of harmful propaganda, incitement and cybercrimes; the allegations have not resulted in a reported conviction, and his legal status in Turkey remains unclear. The demonstration was organized by the group chaired by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who has repeatedly pressured Turkish authorities over Lumbuye and has threatened broader diplomatic consequences. The Turkish Embassy closed its services during the protest and reportedly declined to accept the demonstrators’ petition, while no public decision on extradition or asylum had been announced.
